SARI SHIBATA

I was raised in a mountain region rich in natural beauty in Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture, Japan, where I developed a deep connection with the surrounding landscape from an early age. My artistic journey began with a camera inherited from my grandfather, which I used to photograph the familiar scenes around me—an experience that laid the foundation for my current practice.

After graduating from the College of Contemporary Psychology at Rikkyo University, I worked in the financial sector of a major IT company. There, I gained firsthand insight into the mechanisms of global capitalism. This experience made me more acutely aware of the gap between urban systems and my rural upbringing, which has since become a core theme in my work.

In 2025, I began a dual-base lifestyle between Tokyo and my hometown, where I founded OSHITOPIA, an independent art space situated in a renovated traditional house. The project was initiated in response to a realization—shaped by urban life and the major earthquake that struck the neighboring Noto Peninsula—that urban perspectives often overlook the complexity and vulnerability of rural areas. OSHITOPIA serves as a site for raising questions from the periphery, fostering experimental ways of thinking and relating beyond central structures. It aims to be a place where people can rediscover what has been lost in urban life.

While running our own company, I continue to travel across diverse environments—from the United States and Europe to Africa, the Mongolian grasslands, and the mountainous regions of Thailand. Drawing from immersive field experiences, my work explores the relationship between humans and nature, environmental transformation, and the impact of global capitalism on peripheral communities. My work has been presented in exhibitions both in Japan and internationally.

柴田 早理

日本・富山県南砺市の自然豊かな山間で育ち、幼い頃から土地の風景と深く関わりながら暮らしてきた。写真を始めたきっかけは、祖父から譲り受けたカメラで身の回りの風景を撮影した体験であり、これが現在の表現活動の原点となっている。

立教大学現代心理学部を卒業後、大手IT企業の金融部門に配属。ビジネスの現場でグローバル資本主義の構造を知る。この経験は、自身の育った地方とのギャップを意識化させ、後の作品テーマに深く影響を与えている。

2025年、東京との二拠点生活を開始し、地元・富山県南砺市には住居兼アートスペースとして古民家「OSHITOPIA」を設立。都市での生活と、近隣で発生した能登半島地震をきっかけに、都市から見た地方の視点の欠如に気づいたことが設立の契機となった。OSHITOPIAは、芸術・自然・地域社会のあいだをつなぎ、周縁から問いを立てる拠点として機能している。中央ではない場所で実験的に思考や関係を育む場であり、都市で失われたものを再び拾い直す場所となることを志向している。

現在は夫婦で会社を経営しながら、インドネシアのプランテーション、アメリカ、ヨーロッパ、アフリカ、モンゴルの草原地帯、タイの山岳地域など多様な土地を訪れ、現地での体験をもとに作品を制作している。人間と自然の関係、環境の変容、そしてグローバル資本主義がもたらす影響を主題に、国内外での発表を行っている。
