In August 2025, I stayed for about two weeks with a family living on a plantation in Jember, Indonesia, for the art festival Lanskap Bercakap.

This plantation carries a history of colonial rule—first by the Netherlands, and later by Japan during the Second World War—and still cultivates crops such as coffee, rubber, and tobacco.

The people who work here have lived as plantation laborers for generations throughout this long history.
Even after Indonesia’s independence, plantations in this region, like many others across the country, have continued their daily operations while facing various challenges.

Within this complex and difficult history—one in which Japan also played a part—families continue to live closely with nature.

Sharing their daily lives, I came to feel that the way they support one another and live together is something truly irreplaceable.

In this warm land, where both the climate and the people are gentle, the sun sets beautifully each day—and rises again.

2025年8月、インドネシア・Jemberで開催された芸術祭「Lanskap Bercakap」のために、私は約2週間にわたり、プランテーションに暮らす家族の家に滞在しました。

この農園は、かつてオランダ、そして第二次世界大戦中には日本に植民地支配されていた歴史を持ち、今もコーヒー、ゴム、タバコといった作物が栽培されています。

そこで働く人々は、長い歴史の中で代々プランテーションの労働者として生きてきました。
インドネシア独立後も、この地のプランテーションは国内の多くの地域と同じように、さまざまな課題を抱えながら日々の営みを続けています。

日本も関わる複雑で困難なプランテーションの歴史の中で、今日も自然と共に暮らす家族たち。

その共同生活のなかで、私は助け合って生きる彼らの日常こそが、かけがえのないものだと感じました。

気候も人も温かいこの場所では、今日も美しい太陽が沈み、そしてまた昇っていきます。
