Between Two Worlds was made during a month-long stay on Zanzibar Island, where I moved between two rhythms — the surface of a resort destination and the quieter daily life of the people who work there. I had long wanted to visit Africa, partly because my husband was born on the continent.

Zanzibar was my first experience of Africa. Many men I met had come from mainland Tanzania for seasonal work. At first, I saw them simply as part of the island, but as we spent time together, I realized that this place was not their home either. They had crossed the sea to work.

Through shared meals and small moments, my sense of distance shifted. Rather than observing a different culture, I began to feel that we were all navigating our own positions within a space shaped by tourism, tradition, and the need to make a living.

In Zanzibar, I learned that the boundary between worlds is softer than it seems — appearing in everyday gestures, and disappearing just as easily.

夫が生まれた場所がアフリカにあることもあり、いつかは訪れたいとずっと思っていた。

アフリカのリゾートのような華やかなザンジバル島には、多くのマサイ族が働いていた。
ハイシーズンになると彼らはこの地に集まり、観光の仕事で生計を支えているという。

一か月以上の滞在の中で、私は彼らとご飯を共にしたり、家を訪ねたりするようになった。
最初はあまりにも異なる文化として彼らを見ていたが、次第に自分自身も「この島で過ごす外国人」という立場から語り合えるようになった。

そうして私は、伝統と資本主義のはざまで生きる彼らの姿を、カメラに収めていった。
